(includes spoilers) and don’t take my word for it. definitely see it for yourself first before you let my opinion give you any impressions.

Okay, first of all, I believe that Jay-Z should be stripped of his movie privileges. That one scene where Tom Buchanan invites Nick to his apartment for the party with Myrtle was more like a 21st-century frat party than anything else. The music in general just took the entire movie completely out of context and set it apart from what the book intended. Because of what other people told me, I didn’t go in with expectations of it being like the book. And I know, with artistic license they can take the movie and make of it what they want. That’s fine. But I just feel like they tried to hard to make it a socially-relevant blockbuster. So much of what was done with the movie was done so that it would appeal to the younger generation. If they showed instead, for example, the 1970s film version, no one would watch it. So instead they add pop-culture music and an exorbitant amount of CGI because they (being the producers, etc.) think that it would improve the film. And in a way I guess that’s true. Just the way film is now, movies aren’t good unless they have aesthetic appeal. That’s kind of disappointing because it means that the story itself is becoming more ignored and instead the focus is shifting to the way that things look. In terms of mise-en-scene, the film was beautiful. The costumes, set design, and everything else seemed to match perfectly. It was just that darn soundtrack that didn’t sit well with me. I guess just because that’s one of the most instrumental (no pun intended) parts of the film. The music alters the mood of the audience and helps to set a tone, and I feel like this one just didn’t do that appropriately. Like I said, it tried to hard to fit the mold of modern movie-making. Is that bad? Not necessarily. It’s not like I expected it to be filmed in a 1920s fashion. I just don’t think the movie did the book justice. It was good for what it was, but I think that it didn’t really fit for a good representation of the book. I think the 1970s version was better for that. Because although it was rather slow at moments, that’s the book. There were times when I read the book that I got bored and didn’t feel like finishing because the story didn’t progress (I’d say it was from the first time Gatsby and Daisy have tea together up until Myrtle gets hit with the car). They tried a little bit too hard to make the slower areas more exciting. Also, they cut out some key parts, namely the part with Gatsby’s father and the funeral. There was no funeral. So all in all, it was a good movie and it was definitely worth seeing. Just go in with an open mind and don’t try to compare it with the book. The way that it was made doesn’t really allow for it to be seen as a mirror image to the novel. It was more as a movie for a movie’s sake rather than a movie to honor the book.

i wake up at 7:00 am and i can’t fall back asleep.

actually i woke up at 2 am after a horrible 1984-esque dream and it took me a half hour to go back to sleep and i’m still really freaked out by it.

but then i had another dream that involved me taking care of sting rays and they were so cute so i think i’m going to take marine biology next year (((:

so word of advice. taking 2 naps on a saturday is never a good idea.
